Week 18: Manufactured Countertops

Countertops We have hundreds of square feet of countertops in the Project House—in the kitchen, the outdoor cabana bar area, the home office, the bathrooms, and throughout the house. And we're using Silestone® by Cosentino.

When planning what kind of countertops to install in your new or existing house, remember that the appearance of the countertops is going to have an enormous and immediate effect on the overall appearance of any area they're in. The size, shape, color, texture, and even the edge profile of your countertops will combine Countertops to create a powerful "first impression"—most of all, in the kitchen.

In addition to aesthetic considerations, it's important to remember countertops' reason for existence is to serve a utilitarian function. They'll be cut on, spilled on, banged on, sat upon... you name it. Over their lifetime countertops will be subjected to every kind of abuse imaginable, so the countertops you choose should be able to withstand whatever punishment you and your family can dish out without requiring lots of maintenance.

Silestone® Countertops in the Project House

Countertops Silestone® is a quartz surfacing material with incredible scratch and stain resistance. Quartz is the most abundant mineral on earth. Plus, it is one of the hardest minerals found in nature. In fact, only diamonds, sapphire and topaz are harder than quartz, which means that only something that's as hard as quartz, or harder, will scratch it. Silestone® is composed of 93% natural quartz.

Countertops Plus, the raw Silestone® is manufactured using a process in which the raw quartz, and a blend of binding and coloring ingredients are combined and compacted using a patented vibro-compaction process under vacuum, and formed into sheets. Because of this technology, Silestone® is harder and more flexible than natural stone, and because the highly compressed material is non-porous, the Silestone® does not require sealing like natural stone. This greatly reduces the amount of maintenance the countertops will require over the long term.

The other advantage offered by the quartz surfacing method of manufacture is the ability to control the color of the final product. Over 35 different colors are available-including colors that do not occur in nature.
